Smith's greediness causes a strange creature to reclaim a wish machine that Will finds in an abandoned spaceship.
Once John, Will and Smith determine that Don is unhurt by the exploding fuel pack, it is discovered that Smith's neglect of the hydroponic garden has caused all the fruit and vegetables to die. Incensed, Smith goes into self-exile. After a night in the bush, Smith is brought some rolls and jam by Will.
In their search for a better campsite, they come upon a derelict spaceship half-buried in sand and foliage. Inside, they discover a small box-like device with a skull cap attached. While trying it on for size, Will wishes for something to eat. Suddenly, a box of food materializes next to him.
Back at the Jupiter 2, Will relates his tale. Meanwhile, at the abandoned spaceship, Smith furnishes his new home through the alien machine. Smith returns to the spaceship, claiming he can create a new spaceship for them with the machine.
But all that materializes is a tiny replica of the Jupiter 2. Explaining that the machine will only grant two wishes a day, Smith donates it to community use. Maureen produces a luscious meal with the machine, Penny is granted some tapes of Mozart and Bach, and Judy gets an enticing dress. John calls a meeting and, after reprimanding them for squabbling over the machine's use and neglecting their chores, he requests Smith to destroy it. Smith refuses and carries it back to the abandoned spaceship.
There, he wishes for a servant. Suddenly, a huge creature appears from a door and gestures to Smith to return the machine to him. Smith runs in terror back to the Jupiter 2. Meanwhile, all of the gifts received through the machine have withered and become useless. John leads the men back to the abandoned spaceship to return the machine. The creature takes the machine from Smith and disappears through the mysterious door.
Later that day, Will launches a weather balloon with a small S.O.S. probe rocket attached. But the probe fails to fire and the balloon and rocket explode, hurtling back towards the campsite.
