Second Season Episodes - The Android Machine (episode 36)

The Robinsons cause a simple android to develop into a higher grade model. 

Toying with an intergalactic vending machine, Dr. Smith receives Verda, a green-haired female android. When he takes her back to the Jupiter 2, she settles an argument between Smith and the Robot over the date Columbus discovered America, then begins a class for Penny and Will on the history of the Universe.

Smith and the Robot, rebuffed by her superiority, want to send her back through the machine, but the device can only replace her with monsters. Smith then decides to place rare plants near a suspected monster's cave in the hopes that Verda will be drawn to the menace and be frightened away. Arriving at the cave, Verdafalls for the trap and as the monster rears after Penny and Will, she throws herself between the children to save them. John, at the drill site nearby, blasts the monster into smoke with his laser, but Verda is confused by her self-sacrificing instinct.

Mr. Zumdish, from the Celestial Department Store, appears and tries to collect payment for Verda, but upon checking her he finds her emotional tendencies to be defective. Smith tells Zumdish to take her back and he agrees. Will suggests they trade deutronium for her but Smith balks at the idea. Not wanting to loose Verda, Penny runs away with her. When the security guards find the pair, Verda again protects Penny. Because of her near-human capacities, Zumdish deems Verda a super deluxe model android and she departs to work with him in other parts of the Universe. 

Ray says: Dee Hartford sister in law of Groucho Marx makes an LIS guest apperance as Verda. She would later return in the episodes " Revolt Of The Androids" and "Space Beauty"
